How To Grow, Groom, Trim And Shave Your Beard

Your complete guide to your beard’s care and maintenance, neck design, all styles and hottest trends!

You must have noticed lately that all handsome and cool guys you know all wear beards.

Whether it’s a full beard or just a five o’clock shadow, no matter the length it can make you look exactly as you always wanted but was too difficult to achieve.

A beard can make you look free, independent, cool and trendy yet primitive, wild, bad and deadly sexy and all that, before you even move or open your mouth. Yes, it’s that hot to wear a beard.

Sadly, not all beards are qualified for The Look.

Most men have no idea how to groom, trim or shave their beards, which style is the one for them or how to design their cheek and necklines correctly.

As a result, they either look they are trying too much or that they are homeless. And believe it or not, a bad beard can make you look a lot different than you are, like much older or with extra weight!

So, if you decided to go with the flow and wear the correct beard for your age, face, type and style, then this is the right place for you. It may look easy but until you learn all the experts tips and tricks, it can be a torture!

So, lets:

! Beginners, if this is the first time you are having a beard

then you could ask for the help of a professional in order to design the correct beard for you and then all you have to do is just maintain this look.

However, if you are decided to do it yourself, then you have to have all the tools and take into account many things, as well as the shape of your face.

Your Beard's Length and Size

Your face’s length will determine the length of your beard. A long chin or a long face can’t have anything else than a short beard or you will look very ugly.

On the other hand, if your face is round then a long beard can make you look thinner, and will enhance your manly features. Last, an oval face will ideally match with a medium length beard in order to boost your best features.

Try A Virtual Beard First

Philip’s Style Yourself is a very nice app that you can use to find out how you look with a beard. After uploading your photo, you will be able to test different lengths and styles and even ask the opinion of your friends!

[Though sometimes, asking people for a change in your appearance can turn out to be really confusing or unpleasant so I would suggest just go with your instincts or if you must, just share it on social media and ask your virtual friends to vote. It won’t hurt so much plus you just get votes, not nasty comments from real life friends. :) ]

The Tools

If you take a look at the market, you will find dozens of tools for your beard but the truth is that most of them are too specialized or end up unused. You could start with the basic tools and in time, you will know exactly which tools your beard demands.

That said, you can start with a mirror, a hair comb, hair cutting scissors and a hair or (even better) beard trimmer with guards. I presume you already have razors. If not, get some regular or electric shaving razors, too.

Design The Correct Neckline & Cheek Line For Your Beard

A bad neck or cheek line can totally ruin your beard. Just think for example, all those guys with a very high neckline shaved up to their chins. Although they mainly do it to look thinner, most end up looking as if they have a double chin.

Even if you have the slightest weight issue, such a neckline will ruin your beard and looks. So yes, this is important.

The steps to your neckline

Many men let it natural and it looks great if it doesn’t grow wild. But if you belong to the majority that if let to grow out naturally there will be no neckline visible between their beard and their chest, yes, you need to do this.

So, in order to fake a neckline or better, to get the right neckline that will match your face and neck length, just do the following:

You will need an eye pencil or even a pen (but first make sure it comes out easily) and a ruler.

  • Line A: take the pencil and draw a line under your chin for your one ear to the other.
  • Line B: take the ruler and draw the extension of your sideburns all the way down to the base of your neck
  • Line C: Now, draw a neckline in the height where the two lines meet.

Yes, this is the correct height for your neckline, so trim with caution any hair below it and you’re done!

The steps to your cheek line

If your cheek line naturally grows too high or if you want to make sure it is the correct one, just check the following steps and see if your cheek line is among the winners or it will totally ruins your beard.

Note though, that a low growing cheek line doesn’t ruin your beard so if you just keep it straight and clean from stray hair you are good to go!

So, providing that your cheek line is natural (yes, you must first let it grow naturally) and you don’t like it the way it already is or you wish to find out if it is close to the correct cheek line for you, follow these steps:

You will again need an eye pencil or even a pen that you first make sure that it comes out easily from your skin and a ruler.

  1. Take the pencil and draw a line that connects your sideburns, (from the point your natural cheek line starts), to your mustache or if you don’t grow one, to where your mustache would be (the point where your cheek line connects with it).

  2. Keep the line as high as you can as long as your beard bellow is full. If it’s not, then you should move it down a bit.

  3. Trim with caution any hair above it!

  4. This is the time to turn the other cheek and do the exact same procedure with your pencil but before trimming make sure both sides are even. Note that they can never be completely even though.

How To Make Your Natural Neckline Fade Like A Pro

Even if you don’t need to define a neckline, you can make it fade and blend amazingly with your beard! Most let it grow out naturally but you my friend, are not. Mother Nature is not always a good thing. ;)

For this trick, you will need your comb and your beard trimmer. Note that your beard must be totally dry.

Now, follow the steps:
  1. Comb your beard first to make sure there are no knots or tangles

  2. Take the trimmer and set the guards to the highest level. For example, if your trimmer has 3 different lengths, start with the highest one, number 3. Now, trim the whole surface of your beard.

  3. Now, you will need a closer trim, so put the guards on the next length, number 2 and start trimming your lower neck which mainly covers the area from two inches below your jaw to your Adam’s apple

  4. Continue with an even shorter length on your trimmer (in our case, number 1) and cover the remaining area above your jaw

  5. Now, remove the guards and cover the lower part of your neck with caution in order to clean  any stray hair from your neck

  6. If you like, you may start all over and set the trimmer back again to all the different lengths in order to better blend together the different areas you trimmed

Never Ever

...think that all beards are itchy
It’s mainly the bad hygiene that causes the itch. Hair, especially in the summer or when you sweat, gets dirty easier and causes itching.

Just like the hair on your head, you should try to keep a good hygiene because if you don’t, scratching dirty hair is the perfect way to get an infection or even acne.

...try to even touch your beard if you only have 10 minutes or less
You could destroy it big time if you are in a hurry! Grooming your beard should be something you enjoy and like to do in your time maybe with soft music, a candle and a glass of wine or anyway, the way you usually enjoy a foaming bath and not like done by Sweeney Tod!

...mistake ingrown hair with zits!
But even if you do, stop squeezing them and everything else you see on your face or you could end up with a nastier acne than the one you had in your teens.

And that’s because facial hair helps germs stay on your face longer. So, take your fingers out and always keep a good hygiene!

...groom your beard when it’s wet
because wet hair have completely different length and shape than dry hair so you might end up with a lot shorter beard at best.

One more thing

You should really consider coloring your beard. It is really hot, it can give you a stunning look and a unique beard. From plain bleaching to highlighting, please do play with your beard’s color. Don’t touch your hair, though. The whole point is to the contrast.

Also, does your beard look like Santa’s?

If your beard is a bit grey or even white and you hate it, there are many diy ways to cover grey or white  hair in minutes, with natural dyes from your kitchen!
